Product description
This elegant marine instrument, which is really a reproduction of an Octant of mid 18th century, allows navigants to determine its positionin the sea. By semi-accurately measuring the height of stars or the sun, the mariners found their geographic latitude. Its creation is subjet to debate. It was demonstrated independently the same year (1731) by J.Hadley (England) and T. Godfrey (U.S.A). With time, the wood frame of the sextant (1757) was replaced by metal. It is still used today.
