HIROSAKI KOGIN INSTITUTE

Kogin-sashi, with three hundred years of history, has developed into a technique not only to reinforce fabric but also to decorate it with different patterns of cotton thread.

With the harsh climate in Northern Japan, Hirosaki Kogin Laboratory specializes in producing interior products that use the technique Kogin-sashi. This method was developed by female farmers to make winter life in the rural area of Tsugaru in Aomori Prefecture easier. Kogin-sashi has developed into a technique not only to reinforce fabric but also to decorate it with different patterns of cotton thread. Nowadays, aside from traditional products made with navy blue hemp cloth and white cotton thread, modern and colorful motifs are also used.
