Matt Woods creates animal sculptures using traditional metalwork and woodwork processes to conceive contemporary sculptures with a universal design quality.
In the old stable that's become his workshop, Matt Woods creates animal sculptures. From the powerful features of an auroch to soft lines of a lynx, he draws inspiration from the divinities of multi-millennial mythologies. At first sight the matter may suggest a shiny and oily leather, but it is steel and wood that the artist associates. The steel is heated and hammered on an anvil, left raw from the forge or burned with linseed oil to diversify textures. Horns and snout are sculpted in boxwood or walnut. It's the pupil of ebony, placed last, that will give the animal its spark of life.
