C'est l'art concret de Max Bill qui a été créé entre 1935 et 1938. L'œuvre originale a été publiée sous forme de brochure par une maison d'édition à Paris. Sur la base d'un thème (dessin original) comme noyau d'idée, il a créé les 15 variations selon les 3 mots-clés « continuité », « développement » et « invention ». Le dessin original est un graphique en spirale représentant une ligne qui consiste en un triangle régulier dont un côté fait partie d'un carré parfait, et qui se développe également du carré au pentagone régulier, puis à l'hexagone régulier, à l'heptagone régulier puis à l'octogon
