This maternity statue comes from the region inhabited by the Baoulé, an ethnic group from central Ivory Coast. The Baoulé are renowned for their sophisticated sculptures and their rich artisanal tradition. Baoulé maternity wards, like this one, are symbolic objects which testify to the importance of fertility and motherhood in Baoulé culture.
