Product description

Traditional Indonesian sculpture of a winged deity made of volcanic limestone rock. Height: 60cm: Foot dimensions: L27xL29: Maximum width (wing distance): approximately 45cm. Weight: about 80kg. Balinese sculpture in volcanic stone or limestone, representing a winged figure, sitting in a frontal position. The bust is straight, the legs bent under the body, in a stable and centered posture. The wings, widely spread on both sides, structure the silhouette and frame the figure. The face has calm and symmetrical features, internalized expression. The head is decorated with a headdress sculpted in relief, composed of vegetable and geometric patterns. The torso is adorned with stylized jewelry, necklaces and pectoral ornaments. The hands hold a circular container, treated as a central element of the composition, possibly intended to receive or circulate water. The surface is dense, richly decorated with floral and ornamental patterns. The stone has a brown to dark gray patina, with deposits and superficial erosion testifying to prolonged outdoor exposure. Authentic local sculpture, found in Bali in a large outdoor garden. Surface altered by external elements, natural patina, contains traces of soil, lichens and other natural elements. Stone sculptures are an important part of daily life and Balinese spirituality. They are often found in domestic gardens, courtyards, or water temples. They are generally cut from volcanic limestone that is quickly covered with moss and lichens in the tropical climate, an aesthetically sought after evolution that places the sculpture in a living and organic cycle. This type of sculpture is part of the Balinese tradition of integrating protective and symbolic figures into architectural space. The winged figures evoke intermediate entities between the human world and the divine world, similar to certain representations of apsaras or celestial guardians. Their presence in gardens, temples or near pools contributes to the spiritual structuring of places. The container held by the figure reinforces the association with water, a central element in Balinese Hinduism, linked to the ritual purification and circulation of tirta, sacred water. These sculptures play an aesthetic, functional, and symbolic role, embodying protective forces and helping to maintain a balance between the visible and invisible dimensions of the environment.
