Product description
Traditional Indonesian mermaid sculpture made of volcanic limestone. Total height: 82cm; Foot dimensions: L24xL25cm; maximum width: 27cm; Weight: about 80kg. Balinese sculpture in volcanic stone or limestone, representing a hybrid feminine figure with an aquatic character. The figure is sculpted in a sitting or semi-kneeling position, with the bust straight and the arms brought forward to support a spherical container. The lower body is treated like a fish tail, with a detailed work of scales and an extended dorsal fin forming a vertical structural element at the back of the composition. The face has soft and regular features, with a smooth hairdo pulled back. The volumes are full, compact, and the decorative details are more sober than on some ceremonial pieces. The surface is heavily patinated, with deposits, micro-erosions and variations in grey-green to beige hue, characteristic of prolonged outdoor exposure. This type of sculpture is commonly associated with water features in Balinese architecture. Authentic local sculpture, found in Bali in a large outdoor garden. Surface altered by external elements, natural patina, contains traces of soil, lichens and other natural elements. Stone sculptures are an important part of daily life and Balinese spirituality. They are often found in domestic gardens, courtyards, or water temples. They are generally cut from volcanic limestone that is quickly covered with moss and lichens in the tropical climate, an aesthetically sought after evolution that places the sculpture in a living and organic cycle. The presence of the container held by the figure indicates a potential function as a fountain or spillway, where water flows from the jar or around the sculpture. In Balinese culture, water is a central element, linked to purification, fertility and the circulation of vital forces (tirta). Aquatic female figures, close to the apsaras or to local mythological creatures, embody this relationship with water and its regenerative properties. Installed in gardens, basins or water temples, these sculptures contribute to the symbolic organization of space, serving both as functional support and as a mediation between the material world and the spiritual world.
