Product description
Small frog priory Balinese limestone sculpture (large). Authentic small local sculpture, found in Bali in a large outdoor garden. Surface altered by external elements, natural patina, contains traces of soil, lichens and other natural elements. Dimensions of the frog: Height: 18.5 cm; width: 10 cm; depth: 11 cm; weight: 1.23 kg. Stone sculptures are an important part of daily life and Balinese spirituality. They are often found in domestic gardens, courtyards, or water temples. They are generally cut from clear volcanic limestone that is quickly covered with moss and lichens in the tropical climate, an aesthetically sought-after evolution that places the sculpture in a living and organic cycle. Formally, there are several types of sculptures such as squatting guards, divine or semi-divine figures, ornamental patterns or elements related to water. Frogs are very strongly linked to water, rice fields, and rain cycles. In Bali, where the entire agricultural system is based on water management via subak (irrigation networks), it is a symbol of fertility, abundance and regeneration. It is logically found in gardens, near pools, or in temples linked to water. It is an extension of the living, an echo of the humid soundscape. It acts as an element of continuity in a Balinese garden where one seeks to maintain a balance between built and natural. The little frogs work perfectly in low, horizontal compositions, close to basins or thresholds, it creates a soft visual presence without monumentality. This sculpture is part of an ensemble of musical frogs that are all different.
