SANTOUN collection, Little Saint, big story. Christmas, in Provence, has never been told the same as elsewhere. Its strongest symbol fits in the palm of one hand: the santon. It all started in 1793, the French Revolution closed the churches and prohibited the midnight mass and with it: the crèches. So we recreate it at home, in secret: in each home small figurines of breadcrumbs, wax, wood are born: the “santoun”, little saints. In 1798, in Marseilles, a sculptor had an idea that changed everything: to mold these figurines in clay and give them the features of his own neighbors: the baker, the fishmonger, the shepherd, each with his own profession. The nursery no longer only tells the birth of the Child: it tells the story of an entire village that came to welcome him. In 1803, barely regained religious freedom, Marseille organized its first Santons Fair. It still exists today more than two centuries later, passed on from grandparents to grandchildren. None of this is copied: each character is reinterpreted, redrawn, restyled by the hand of our artist, then painted in watercolor. A little saint, to tell such a big story. Enamelled metal tray.
