■ FEATURES — Nishijin-ori, a traditional silk textile from Kyoto, has long been woven from richly colored, pre-dyed threads for kimono obi sashes. Here it is finished by hand into headwear, one piece at a time, in a hat atelier in Japan. Its soft sheen and texture combine lightness with quiet elegance. ■ DETAILS — Deep enough to cover the whole head, it has a black ribbed band that frames the face like a fringe. Woven with a special technique, the Nishijin-ori keeps its airy volume and texture even after washing, and brightens the face. It feels remarkably light and is the least tight of all N HEAD WEAR, so you can even lie down while wearing it. Some people roll it up in their bag and switch hats while they are out. The band that touches the skin is 100% cotton, and even the name tag is stitched only in part so it never presses against the scalp: comfort when worn, considered down to the parts you cannot see. The black band can be folded back to the depth you like. ■ HOW TO WEAR — With a kimono or with jeans. Its look changes with the colors and clothes you pair it with, at home on special days and ordinary days alike. Choose the one of five colors that suits what you wear. ■ CARE — Keeps its shape and texture wash after wash. Hand wash with a mild detergent for delicates, or dry clean. If the ruffles lose their shape, reshape them with a low-heat iron. ■ SPEC — Ref.
