Product description

Wave tatewaku is a courtly pattern in which stylized wave and spray patterns are arranged between pairs of undulating lines that express the idea of billowing or rising up. It is an old pattern, appearing on textiles in the Shosoin Treasure House, and is often used on costumes for the Noh theater as well. It also resembles the way humans treat and speak to each other--like the waves, at times rhythmically flowing back and forth, and at other times surging to a higher peak.
