Up until 1850 the tradition was that you decorated your Christmas tree with wreaths and dried fruit, in particular, dried apples. In 1858, a drought in the Vosges area of France decimated the annual apple harvest. That’s why a glass blower had the idea to blow his first baubles, colored red to imitate apples.
