This small box is a Pocket Sundial, a reproduction of a Dyptich dial.This model has a Rose of the Winds, a classic figure on compasses, maps or nautical charts, used to display the orientation of the cardinal directions, engraved on brass.Portable sundials were widely used between 15th-17th Centuries. These ancient clocks were made of different materials from wood to ivory, beautifully decorated or for everyday use.The string (gnomon) will mark it with its shadow the local solar time (different from official time). For a correct measure the compass inside must indicate the North (XII).
