The Making
Honoring Anatolia
Marāu pieces are entirely handcrafted, created through a process that honors both design and heritage. During the development of the collection, we travelled extensively across Anatolia, meeting artisans who continue to practice traditional crafts that are gradually disappearing. By working directly with these masters in their own regions, we are able to collaborate with them using locally sourced materials and techniques deeply rooted in their cultural context. Each piece is produced by hand and often involves several artisans with specialized skills, from metal engraving and stone carving to textile work. This collaborative process preserves the authenticity of the materials and highlights the value of the craftsmanship behind every object. The research behind the collection was equally important. For nearly a year, we immersed ourselves in studying books and historical sources related to ancient Anatolian civilizations. We also visited archaeological excavation sites across the region to better understand the material culture, forms, and symbolism of the era. While developing the designs, we collaborated with archaeologists to ensure that our interpretations of historical motifs and objects were thoughtful and respectful. Their insights helped guide the translation of this rich heritage into a contemporary design language. Through this process, Marāu aims not only to create collectible design pieces, but also to support local craftsmanship and keep Anatolia’s rich artisanal traditions alive.
