You've probably noticed it : the traditional technique of cane furniture is back with a bang in contemporary interiors. This year, the boom created by the famous S32 chairs by Marcel Breuer - which had antique dealers and decorators fighting over them at a high price – paved the way for the emergence of new pieces of cane furniture, as selected by MOM this week.
GEBRUEDER THONET VIENNA GMBH (GTV)
Thanks to the striking effect of the steam-bent beech, the Bodystuhl chair proposed by Nigel Coates shows a profile showing sinuous shapes characterized by a structure with variable thickness. The large seat and the ergonomic backrest, made in woven cane, recall shapes and materials of Lehnstuhl, already designed by the English designer for Wiener GTV Design.

Jonghlabel combines innovative design with artisan production techniques. This craft is known for its use of rattan and the hexagonal pattern. The material, rattan, is fixed due to the craft. Innovation occurred by experimenting with new patterns, coloring experiments and rattan techniques. The collection is completely made out of rattan which has been reinforced by injecting it with a natural resin. While honoring the traditional crafts, these innovations are brought together in a specially designed collection. All furniture – from carpentry to caning – is handmade.
Caning is a method of weaving surface used for furniture. The material, cane, is derived from the peeled bark of a rattan stalk which most commonly found in South East Asia. The caned furniture has a long tradition and history back in 17th century when European trade with Asian.
