Mantis by Bernard Schottlander
Driven by the same energy that led us to reproduce the series of lights by the French engineer Bernard-Albin Gras and the chair Surpil, we are delighted to present here those by an equally extraordinary artist, the English sculptor-designer Bernard Schottlander. As admirer of Alexander Calder, in 1951 Schottlander created the “MANTIS” series of lamps. Movement is intrinsic to all of Schottlander’s work: an artist, an engineer and in no small measure a handyman, he devised a clever system of counterweights combined with a series of strong and flexible metal bars.

Charles Kalpakian, Strong impressions
After honing his skills with Ora Ito and Christophe Pillet, Charles Kalpakian established his studio in 2011 and developed personal projects that blended Eastern and European inspirations. He then crossed paths with gallerist Béatrice Saint-Laurent, instantly seduced by his plural culture. "A determining meeting and an engaged woman who encouraged me to deepen my formal and narrative language." Very quickly, he followed up with successes with the Cinétisme wall shelves, bold-colored microarchitectures published by La chance, or with the rotating Tube appliques, to be found at Nemo Lighting. At the last Maison & Objet salon, his geometric plaster appliques, baptized Soul - which evoke his hometown, Beirut, in pieces - were widely acclaimed at the DCW stand. An editor with whom he continues a fruitful collaboration while waiting to self-publish his first collection of floor lamps and coffee tables.
