LUISA MAISEL

I'm an American ceramic artist, living and working in France for the past 40 years. My Ceramic sculptures use contemporary, cultural and historical references, a mixture of traditional ceramics and the artistry of craft.

My sculptures often take the form of portraits in 'Face-to-Face', or treat accumulation through 'Stacking & Piling', here I question the value of everyday objects and the symbolic appropriation that we lend to those objects, and ‘Ceramic-ing’, my research in clay through pottery; functional or not, I explore shape, color and technique, to express beauty and emotion through fairly simple forms. As far as the material goes, I am fascinated by the clays complexity, it’s transformation from solid to liquid, from raw to fired, its contrast between clean and dirty, rough and glossy, dull to sublime.
