Minna Niskakangas painted the Helmililja pattern using the traditional tempera technique, in which egg is used as a binding substance for the colours. This painting technique, familiar from icon painting, is characterised by a subtle translucency that creates extremely beautiful, delicate details. Minna composed a flowing, pastel-coloured floral pattern on both a dramatic dark grey and a sky blue base colour.
