Indonesian Batik, originally mainly produced on the island of Java, was included in 2009 by UNESCO on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The word, of Javanese origin, has the same root as the word titik, which means "point". The batik color printing process uses wax (“wax reserve” or “spare coloring” process). On the fabric obtained, different tones or contrasts are juxtaposed or superimposed, forming all kinds of patterns. Batik is dyed by artisans, who take pride in drawing patterns on the fabric by tracing lines and dots with hot wax; this resists vegetable dye and other dyes, which allows the craftsman to select different colors by dipping the fabric in a dye, then removing the wax with hot water and repeating the operation with another color as many times as desired. The great diversity of motifs reflects the variety of influences, from Arabic calligraphy, European floral art, to Chinese phoenixes, including Japanese cherry blossoms and Indian or Persian peacocks.
