Product description

This chest captures the core features of IWAYADO TANSU—a Traditional Craft Designated by the Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry—in its most compact form. [Specifications] Dimensions: W 57 cm / D 34 cm / H 51 cm | Weight: 22.4 kg | Materials: Zelkova, Paulownia, Cedar | Wood Finish: Wiped-urushi (fuki-urushi, natural lacquer) | Hardware: Copper treated with potassium sulphide (metal engraving). [Construction & Materials] The interior uses paulownia for its natural moisture-regulating properties, while the exterior features zelkova with its bold, expressive wood grain. The finish uses natural urushi lacquer, which hardens with ambient humidity. Under the traditional wipe-lacquer finish (fuki-urushi), the urushi lacquer is applied with a cloth and cured slowly in a humid room. This process is repeated five times, resulting in a glossy, deep color that highlights the wood grain and creates a more beautiful appearance. Urushi lacquer also provides water repellency and antibacterial properties, improving durability. As it ages, its transparency increases and its appearance changes, which is another point that makes it endearing. While the standard finish shown is the reddish-brown achieved through wiped-urushi, options in black, red, or blue are also available upon request. [Hand-Engraved Hardware & Motifs] A defining feature of the cabinet, the distinctive metalwork is hand-carved using over 50 different chisels. Through custom ordering, every piece of hardware—including handles and locks—can be tailored, offering choices from intricate traditional designs to modern original designs. Traditional motifs carry specific symbolic meanings: Peonies represent wealth, honor, and prosperity; Ivy engraved on the corners symbolizes strong bonds that hold valuable items securely; Heart-shaped engravings on the base represent the "boar's eye" motif, invoking protection and the prosperity of future generations. These motif choices allow you to create a one-of-a-kind piece infused with personal meaning. The standard copper hardware shown is treated with potassium sulphide and finished with a clear protective coating to prevent discoloration. Hardware made of iron, brass, or silver is also available as an option upon request.
