  • Unique pieces - Han dynasty glazed pot - THE SILK ROAD COLLECTION

Product description

During the Han dynasty these rice pots would have been grave gifts filled with grains or rice so the departed would have food in the afterlife. The unique colour comes from low-fired green lead glazing that transformed through burial and time into an attractive silvery iridescence. The shape is based on ancient bronze vessels of the Shang dynasty called ‘hu’. The simple and elegant form is decorated with two round handles with taotie masks moulded on the round belly. The taotie are 3000-year old motifs of mythical early-Chinese monsters without a lower jaw.
