In Japan, the lack of in-depth study of wa glass has endangered traditional glassmaking techniques that have existed since the Meiji period. In the 1980s, through trial and error, Hirota Glass was able to revive the technique of making opalescent glass, and successfully designed and produced the "Taisho Roman Collection", which was the most popular glassware during the Taisho period(1912-1926).
