Handmade Arita porcelain lidded cup, part of the Residues of Fire collection.Each cup is individually saggar-fired — enclosed with rice straw, gosu (traditional Japanese cobalt pigment), copper wire, and metal wire, allowing smoke, carbon, and mineral vapours to act directly on the raw porcelain surface. Fired in reduction or oxidation, each piece carries its own range: deep purples and charcoal, burnt amber and gold, dark streaks left where rice straw pressed against the porcelain. The interior is finished in a transparent satin glaze.Thrown in Arita porcelain during a three-month residency at Kouraku Kiln, Arita, Japan. Traditionally used for chawanmushi, a savoury steamed custard, and equally suited to tea or anything worth keeping warm. No two cups are alike — each surface is shaped by the unique chemistry of its firing.Food-safe interior. Dishwasher safe, though gentle hand washing is recommended. Fragile — handle with care.
