JOHN MAC CERAMICS
Residues of fire. Traces left by forces beyond control.
John Mac Ceramics is a French studio practice rooted in saggar firing — a process where control is surrendered to fire, smoke, and atmosphere. Each piece is enclosed with organic materials and minerals. What emerges is unrepeatable: surfaces marked by chance, bearing the memory of the elements that shaped them. Developed through a practice in Arita, Japan, the work stands in quiet contrast to that region’s tradition of precision — opening space for imperfection, chance, and transformation. All works are handcrafted in France using French and Japanese porcelain.

Handcrafted saggar-fired porcelain vessels made in France. Each piece is enclosed with organic materials and minerals — rice straw, copper, steel wool, gosu — and fired in an electric kiln. The results are unrepeatable: surfaces marked by smoke, ash, and chance. No two pieces are alike.
Developed through a practice in Arita, Japan, at Kouraku Kiln, the work draws on the region’s deep porcelain heritage while embracing imperfection and transformation. Rooted in wabi-sabi philosophy, John Mac Ceramics explores the tension between control and surrender, intention and the unexpected.
